Chalk and acrylic painting

Mixed media landscape of the South Downs (Devil’s Dyke). Began as a chalk study looking at the geological layers of our landscape that are underneath with the colours of a traditional landscape.

After this I sealed in the chalk with a clear acrylic gloss so that I could work on top. Using acrylic paint I attempted to create a more painterly look to the landscape while also trying not to completely cover the chalk effect.

I’m not sure I like the complete look of the piece but it has made me think about the connection between the human body and the landscape, something also explored by Henry Moore.
