Running Stitch

running stitch

The Running Stitch art piece was definitely in my thought process when creating my artwork. The theme of this piece is to map the journeys of the visitors of the who viewed the piece. The resulting tapestry that was created from sewing the journeys formed a visual experience for the audience, there is a reference in the web page about it acting like a surveillance of the people that participated.
These literal journeys that are documented in the tapestry are visually similar to the paintings I did at the beginning of the year, but I have moved on to look at more metaphorical journeys. The thread is thin and fragile, similar to how I perceive life as being, but when it is entwined and tangled with events and other people it can become strong, becoming a community of strength. The canvas used in the running stitch project collects data. whereas my piece attempts to create a structure that only exists if none of the threads are cut or damaged. Although I haven’t tested this, I am certain that if one thread in either artwork is cut it will begin to quickly unravel and lose its structure.
