Charcoal portrait

This is the first attempt that I have ever made at a portrait. I am happy with the result of the sketch, but some practice is needed on proportions, as well as the human depth that I have seen from other portraits. The colours in the original image (a photograph of a friend’s mother) are very intense, for example, the red of the flower and her top contrasted with the white of her necklace and the background. So would possibly be worth working with for a colour painting in the future.

Having seen ” The Girl with the Pearl Earring” a  few years ago in Holland I believe that this did inspire my desire to attempt a portrait, as well as the image itself which was so beautifully composed.
